Periodic Eye Examinations

Medically reviewed by: Op. Dr. Alim Hüseynov · Last updated: 7 September 2026

Why periodic eye examinations matter

Many eye conditions cause no symptoms until damage is already done. Glaucoma progresses silently, diabetic retinopathy can be advanced before vision changes, and early macular disease is easily missed. A periodic examination is how these are found while treatment still protects sight.

What a full examination includes

  • Visual acuity and refraction
  • Intraocular pressure measurement
  • Slit-lamp examination of the anterior segment, lids and tear film
  • Dilated fundus examination of the optic disc, macula and peripheral retina
  • Where indicated: visual field testing, optical coherence tomography (OCT), corneal topography, pachymetry, fundus photography

Suggested intervals

  • Children: assessment in infancy, before starting school, and whenever a squint, head tilt or reading difficulty is noticed
  • Adults without risk factors: every two years, and annually from about the age of 40 when glaucoma and presbyopia screening becomes relevant
  • Diabetes: dilated examination at diagnosis in type 2 and five years after diagnosis in type 1; then annually, more frequently if retinopathy is present, and more closely during pregnancy
  • Family history of glaucoma: annual examination with pressure, disc assessment and, where indicated, field testing and OCT
  • High myopia: annual dilated peripheral retinal examination
  • Contact lens wearers: annual examination of the cornea and tear film
  • After refractive or cataract surgery: according to the schedule set by your surgeon, then routine review

Seek assessment without waiting for a routine appointment

  • Sudden loss of vision or a curtain across part of the field
  • A sudden increase in floaters, or flashes of light
  • New double vision, or eye pain with redness, nausea and haloes
  • Straight lines appearing wavy
  • Injury or chemical exposure to the eye

These intervals are general guidance. Your own schedule is set by your ophthalmologist according to your findings and risk factors.

Frequently asked questions

How often should adults have their eyes checked?

Every two years without risk factors, and annually from about the age of 40 or if you have risk factors.

My vision is fine — do I still need an examination?

Yes. Glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and early macular disease often cause no symptoms at first.

Will my pupils be dilated?

Usually yes for a full retinal examination. Vision is blurred for several hours afterwards, so arrange not to drive.

How often are checks needed in diabetes?

At diagnosis in type 2 and five years after diagnosis in type 1, then annually or more often if retinopathy is present.
